Day 148 – 2,024 Words/Day Process Log – Experiments

This past weekend, I did something I’ve been talking about doing for years – I saw 3-shows in a weekend. Now. I thought I would do this in a different city, like Washington, DC or New York. But I’d already bought a ticket for one show, and it wasn’t hard to find two other shows I was interested in attending.

I started fussing about my itinerary because my original plan of driving into the city and then parking didn’t work out. I waited too long and my preferred parking deck was sold out. That turned out to be a good thing. I ended up using long-term parking at a MARTA station, took the train into the city and public transportation to get around the city.

It worked.

What helped me organize the weekend was when I looked at the weekend as a chance to learn. And I learned a lot that I will use with my next arts weekend. One thing I learned is that I need a vision for the weekend. I didn’t write down what I wanted and what things were important. I now know how to do that next time.

I also figured out what’s important to me and what’s not. For example, usually when I take trips, I like to try different places to eat. I’m discovering that for my art weekends, restaurants aren’t that important to me. I’d rather use that money to stay in a nicer hotel while sticking to my typical diet.

I’m also trying different seat locations in different theatres. I’ve discovered that sitting closer to the stage doesn’t necessarily mean a better seat. I’ll need to try different days to see if I’m a better fit for the crowd.

The most important reminder is that the trip doesn’t have to be perfect. I don’t have to get the hotel and the show and the seat location right the first time. I have the margin to keep trying again and again to keep tweaking the process and it’s right for me. I always didn’t have the margin to do that. I should appreciate that now I do have it.

Keep moving forward. Keep getting better.
