Day 156 – 2,024 Words/Day Process Log – Familiarity

If the mind likes comfort, then the only way to get comfortable with something new is to do a lot of it so that it becomes familiar.

The first time I changed employers was hard. I basically worked in the same department for the same employer for 14 years. Yes, I was promoted and had different jobs, but there really wasn’t a chance. It didn’t help that I changed cities and went from a suburban life to a straight up urban one.

My second time changing cities and jobs, it got better. It became more familiar. I knew that it was going to take about one year to learn how to do the job. I also learned more about in what environments I excelled under and what I needed from supervisors.

The next two job changes were easier. I knew what I wanted, what I needed, and how to change positions. I had the experience of knowing if a supervisor was telling me the truth or telling me something that I wanted to hear in order to get me to stay in a position.

I knew how to change positions. I straight up developed a protocol for it. I’m not scared of changing jobs because I know how to find another one. That comfort only came because of experience.

Instead of shying away from unfamiliar situations, I need to remember that it’s a sign to just get familiar with it. If the mind likes comfort, then the only way to get comfortable is to do a lot of it so that it’s familiar.

Keep moving forward. Keep getting better.
