When I first started tracking my food intake, I tended to undereat during the morning and then overeat after 3 pm. Between a light lunch and skipping a mid-afternoon snack, by the time 6:00 pm rolled around I was ready to abandon dreams of seeing lab results in the normal range. A doctor suggested I eat more during the day. I did not understand what “more” meant. “More” was not quantifiable. So, after experimentation, I came up with something that worked – 1,000 calories by 1 pm.
It didn’t work all the time, but I could tell when I didn’t eat that number of calories by 1 pm to start to get concerned if my calories were too low after lunch.
I’ve been playing with doing something similar when it comes to writing – 1,000 words by 1 pm. That would mean I could get in a morning session and could sneak in a page or two of writing during lunch. 1,000 words is not my word count goal, but it starts the momentum of the day. Then, when I log off work, I can tell myself – it’s only 1,000 words, set the timer and get to work.
Keep moving forward. Keep getting better.
