Day 47 Reporting – 2,024 Words/Day Process Log –Lessons From A Missed Deadline

So, I missed the deadline for a submissions call. I thought my tracking system was good enough. Here’s my typical workflow when I see a submissions call:

  1. Create a section in my OneNote Projects Notebook
  2. Create a page for the Submission Call
  3. Copy and Paste the information of the Submissions call or send the page there.
  4. Put the deadline on my electronic calendar.
  5. Start a folder under my Projects folder on my computer with the deadline date.
  6. Start a WORD document with thoughts and maybe an overview of the piece I want to write. In this case, even though the call was for pitches and a writing sample, I drafted the pitch and a discovery draft of the piece. I was about 90% done.

Yet, when I pulled up the submissions call on the day of the deadline, I noticed something I had not tracked – the time. I’m used to deadlines for writing that are until midnight – either Eastern Standard Time or Pacific. Being that I’m on the East Coast, as long as I submitted the piece before midnight, I was good.

It was a practice that made me sloppy. This deadline was 6 pm Pacific Standard Time. By the time I pulled up my pitch + writing sample at 9:00 pm EST, I missed the deadline. What have I learned from this?

  1. Read the entire call including the deadline time.
  2. Plan to submit a piece the day before the deadline. This time, it was an overlooked time deadline. Next time, something could have happened with my computer or my internet connection to prevent me from submitting the day of.
  3. As part of my brain dump/thoughts phase, I need to include a schedule with deadlines, not just the final deadline.
  4. Finishing stories/pieces by a deadline is something that I need practice.

Because the piece is written and I like it, I’ll use it for my weekly newsletter. That’s the beautiful thing about writing – nothing is ever wasted.

Keep moving forward. Keep getting better.
