Day 63 Reporting – 2,024 Words/Day Process Log – Tiny Actions

Ahh, rejection. It’s something that I can’t avoid and honestly, it’s something I shouldn’t want to avoid if I want to keep growing. Too many times, though, rejections upon rejections upon rejections can become disheartening.

I’ve faced the same thing with different aspects of my life like when I looked for a new job or when my health journey stalled. It’s so easy to listen to those voices, to settle for what you have or what you think you can get instead of being honest with yourself about what you want and moving forward.

You know the voices I’m talking about. They speak in strangely familiar tones. Here are some I’ve heard before:

You’ll never make it.

It’s too late.

Just be glad with what you have.

You want too much.

When this happened when I was looking for a job, I got into the habit of immediately taking action. I did one little thing, sent one little ship out, took one action which was in opposite to whatever those voices said. I updated my resume. I sent out a new job application. I signed up for a course. I reviewed the course materials of one I’d already taken.

I didn’t argue with the voices. I simply built up the evidence of why I could accomplish what I wanted to do.

When it came to being healthy, I’d go take a walk or do one of those 5-minute song YouTube exercise videos or post in a walking group, committing to showing up on Saturday or plan to visit a park on the weekends. I acted in accordance to the person I wanted to become. These actions took less than five minutes.

Oh, and I guarded my dreams. Someone only had to doubt me once. If that happened, I never spoke to them about my goals again. I have enough critical voices, thank you very much.

So, I don’t know why it took me this long to use the trick that’s helped me in the past to help me with my writing. It’s one of the questions I use that I’m keeping track of to compile a book, mostly for myself if I want to be honest but I’ll throw it up online for everyone else, too. Here it is:

What is one tiny thing I can do right now to move me toward the person I want to become? It has to be less than 5 minutes. Here’s some I can think of:

  1. Brainstorm story ideas – settings, characters, and problems
  2. Research one reprint market
  3. Update my writing resume
  4. Update my bio
  5. Post a link to my latest newsletter

Let’s see if this stops the spiraling which is so counterproductive.

Keep moving forward. Keep getting better.
