Day 67 Reporting – 2,024 Words/Day Process Log – An Artist’s Life Is About Completing Projects

I’ve been reading Barbra Streisand’s memoir My Name is Barbra since last year. I started with the audiobook and then decided to buy a hard copy. My rationale for having both formats is that having both versions would help me get through the almost 1,000-page book. That was my goal – to get through reading the book so I could say that I’ve read X number of books in a certain time frame.

Well, something happened while reading the book. I stopped looking at it as a memoir and started to look at it as a window into the life of a working artist. And one thing I realized is that I can live her life. Well, I obviously don’t have a beach house or a movie star husband. I don’t mean in that way. I mean the everyday life.

The book is a treasure for an artist at any stage because she writes about her work process. In her everyday life, this is how it goes:

  1. She gets an idea for a project.
  2. She fleshes out her idea while fighting for the resources to finish the project.
  3. She asks for what she wants.
  4. She revels in the process, being exacting.
  5. She finishes the project and then goes back to Step 1.

I’ve made the mistake of thinking when I get to a certain point that creating will be different. Reading and taking my time reading that book, however, let’s me know that the art is all there is at any stage. The projects may be bigger. You may have more resources. But in the end, we all come to the page or to our field of work and do the work. The work is all there is. It’s something I have to keep reminding myself of.

So, that’s why I’m no longer rushing toward the finish line. The book is on my nightstand so when I have trouble falling to sleep, I can read a couple of pages. I have the audio version so I can listen to it while I’m washing the dishes after dinner.

It’s no longer about just trying to get through. It’s about learning from a master.

Keep moving forward. Keep getting better.
