Day 78 Reporting – 2,024 Words/Day Process Log – Time and Focus and Patience

Everything is easy when you accept how hard it is. I’ve heard that phrase before and I believed it but something about it just didn’t sit right, and I had to ask myself why. Writing isn’t hard for me. Sitting down at a computer and making things up? No. That’s not the hard part. I have stories on my hard drive to prove that.

What’s hard for me about being a writer is that I underestimated the amount of time it takes to get really good at it. I mean, we’re talking about hours a day for years on end, breaking down stories, studying, the workshops, the submissions, the rejections and sometimes the outright meanness of a “community.”

I went through a period when I lived in DC where I thought I’d wasted my time when it came to writing. I could see no difference; I could not see where I was making any traction, and the worst thing was that I felt like nothing I wrote mattered. I regretted the time and money I spent going to workshops. I could have had memories of going to Aruba. I could have gone to Paris or Ireland or at least have one stamp in my passport.

So. Here’s what I’ve gained during those go-go years – friends. I guess you could say it’s a network of sorts, but the term networking seems so cold. I gained people. I gained a framework. I gained knowledge that it is possible.

And I take back the hard part. Day in and day out is the part that’s hard. Consistency is hard. Self discipline to get to the page is hard. The courage to send out my work is hard. Everything is hard until it’s familiar.

Yes, I come to the page every day not knowing that if what I write will ever matter, but I still come to the page. And each day I sit down and write my stories, I win.

Keep moving forward. Keep getting better.
