Day 96 Reporting – 2,024 Words/Day Process Log – Writers Opening Their Own Stores

Dean Wesley Smith is doing a series on branding over on his website. Part of that is encouraging writers to open their own Shopify shop. It’s something that is tooling in the back of my mind because, as I mentioned before, my focus needs to be on finishing the current series I’m working on.

And then it occurred to me, what the big picture was with all of this. All right. The reason why JK Rowling is so wealthy is because of the licensing deals with Harry Potter. She’s got a stake in the mugs, the robes, the t-shirts, the Broadway show, and the theme park rides.

I’ve seen a couple of indie writers sell merch, but it’s been something hands on like a special one-time-only box that readers pre-ordered. If they had a Shopify store, they could just have the mugs in the store and wouldn’t have to incur the cost of keeping inventory. If it sells, it sells. If it doesn’t, then other than a couple of samples, they’re really not out of money.

It’s like setting the foundation.

Keep moving forward. Keep getting better.
